On June 26th, The Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program (NVTRP) partnered with Final Salute Inc. to host a day camp for local women veterans and their children.
Organized by NVTRP and Final Salute Inc. volunteer Rachel Engler, the event was among the first equine-assisted programs of its kind in Northern Virginia specifically aimed at the needs of women veterans. Led jointly by a mental health professional and certified therapeutic riding instructors, the camp allowed participants to work on life skills while also developing tools to promote mental well-being.
Thirteen veterans took part in an unmounted equine-facilitated mental health session, a mounted therapeutic riding lesson and a horsemanship workshop during the course of the three-hour camp.
Final Salute Inc. is a 501(c)(3) whose mission is to provide safe and suitable housing to homeless women veterans, as well as provide other related support assistance.
